about

Liner Notes by Andy Grozier

"Matthew Dickson writes with both a beautiful precision and an exquisite, visceral honesty. Following in the footsteps of those who inspire him (Cohen, Dylan, Gilmour et al) he is a songwriter steeped in a poet's wine.

The 10 tracks of Acidic, Dickson's debut album, move through bluesy country numbers: such as 9 Bottles & Joanne (the former a perfect pop song, the latter a beautiful lament) and psychedelic, electric-cool-aid drenched tracks such as opener Evening & instrumental Wiggy (an atmospheric, trippy jam), all smoothly-cigarette rolled together under the papers of a warm 60's folk vibe. The musical variance runs together like a perfectly blended whisky under the careful watch of the Master Blender .

Lyrically the album dances between the elegant ("we were our salvation; a flood of alcohol"), the visually striking ("the bird on the steeple shan't chime for very long") to the visceral ("I need your vulnerability, I need your lips red on mine"). Displaying the writer's talent as both skilled poet and thoughtful musician, these songs drip with an ability to structure rhythm around such selective, evocative rhyme.

Tracks Bells of St Mary & Cancer deserve a particular mention for their simple beauty and their cutting brutality respectively. Never has a spiteful, emotional exhalation of fury sounded as delightful as Cancer; due in no small part to an exceptional vocal performance, whereas St Mary holds the wonderful beauty of classic folk songs of days long gone.

With Acidic the Glasgow born Dickson has formed an album that brings together folk and psychedelia of the '60's and '70's with the beat poetics of the '50's while firmly placing itself in these modern times; marking out a musical landscape upon which he can begin to build his own sonic church.

This is a debut album that will last the test of time and is unquestionably the first footfall in what shall be a long and wondrous journey. I wait in anticipation for the next step."
